Fenerbahce – Khimki

Two teams coming off Round 6 wins and looking to turn them into winning streaks meet when Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul hosts Khimki Moscow Region. Fenerbahce bested Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv 65-75 last week behind Ali Muhammed, who went off for 17 points on 5-of-6 three-point shooting off the bench. Khimki topped Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade 83-77 with the backcourt duo of Errick McCollum and Alexey Shved controlling things.

Defense has been Fenerbahce’s calling card so far this season with it allowing 72.3 points per game. Khimki’s averages to date don’t mean much since the team has not yet played at full strength, but when it has Alexey Shved and Errick McCollum together, it is as dynamic as any backcourt in the competition. Fenerbahce will rely on Lorenzo Brown, Nando De Colo, Ali Muhammed and Melih Mahmutoglu to do their best in wearing down the Khimki stars at both ends of the floor.

Khimki is still finding the balance with so many players having missed games this season. The roster has a powerful frontline with Jonas Jerebko, Devin Booker, Jordan Mickey and Greg Monroe – a foursome that could cause trouble for any team. Khimki needs to make sure that the big men stay involved on the offensive end, which would keep opponents off balance and give Coach Kurtinaitis the explosive attack he desires.

Stefan Jovic has missed the first six games of the season. Sergey Monia has missed the last three games.

Zalgiris – Real

High-flying Zalgiris Kaunas will look to at least keep its share of first place when it hosts Real Madrid on Friday. The Lithuanian champs come off a 74-83 win at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne – their fourth road win in as many games – behind 25 points from October MVP Marius Grigonis. Now Zalgiris looks for its second home win. Real, which is winless in three road games, bested FC Bayern Munich last week 100-82 behind 19 points from Jaycee Carroll.

The Real Madrid’s offense is always dangerous and Zalgiris must do everything possible to keep the visitors from getting easy points. Attacking the offensive glass through Joffrey Lauvergne, Nigel Hayes and Martinas Geben could keep Real from getting its way in transition. Zalgiris has drawn the joint-fourth-fewest fouls this season (19.5 per game), though its 91.1% free-throw shooting is the league’s best. Attacking the basket more and drawing more fouls would only benefit the hosts.

Zalgiris swingman Patricio Garino will be out of action until December after a knee operation.

Real has not been aggressive so far this season, which can be seen from the fact that its opponents have averaged a mere 11.2 turnovers per game, which is second-fewest in the league. If the pressure is not on the playmakers, Real needs to intimidate in the paint thanks to Walter Tavares and Usman Garuba. Zalgiris has made 56.3% of its two-pointers this season and shutting down its game in the paint would be a boost to Real’s chances.

Felipe Reyes has missed Real’s first six games of the season. Fabien Causeur tested positive for COVID-19 and missed last week’s game.

Bayern – Crvena Zvezda

Two teams coming off Round 6 losses meet when FC Bayern Munich hosts Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade on Friday. Bayern saw its winning streak snapped last week with a 100-82 loss at Real Madrid. Zvezda slipped back into the losing column with an 83-77 defeat at Khimki.

Bayern has been excellent on the glass this season. It is outrebounding opponents by 6.7 per game and its 11.5 offensive rebounds per game are fourth-best in the league, led by Jalen Reynolds. Another strong effort on the glass would be a great help for Zvezda to hold off Bayern and add another win to its record.

Zvezda will look to keep its perfect record against Bayern intact on Friday, but it will be no easy task. The visitors have the poorest numbers of the league in two-point shooting (46.3%), and that’s something they will have to work on. The main job for Zvezda players will be to establish its place in the game early so that Bayern doesn’t catch fire as it has in recent weeks.

Panathinaikos – CSKA Moscow

A classic EuroLeague matchup will have another chapter written on Friday when Panathinaikos OPAP Athens welcomes CSKA Moscow to the Greek capital in Round 7. Both teams returned to the winning path last week and now one of them will turn that into a winning streak. Panathinaikos last defeated Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul at home, 82-68, while CSKA bested Valencia Basket 84-75.

After only winning its opening game, Panathinaikos was back on track last week and will look to keep on building on that against the defending champs. The Greens will have to focus on stopping Will Clyburn and former teammate Mike James, as they are CSKA’s main offensive weapons, but must beware of dominant big men Nikola Milutinov and Toko Shengelia, too.

CSKA will travel to Athens with the goal of adding another win in a game that could come down to a single free throw. The main weapon for the visitors against the Greens seems to be long-range shooting and we will probably see plenty of that in another homecoming for Coach Dimitris Itoudis. A good shooting night could make the difference.

Valencia – Milano

EuroLeague action lands in Spain once again as Valencia Basket hosts AX Armani Exchange Milan on Friday in Round 7. Valencia suffered its second defeat last week at CSKA, 84-75, while Milan has not played since it defeated Real Madrid at home, 78-70, on October 16. Valencia will look to get back to its best form while Milan will have to shake off the rust from its two-week stop.

Valencia has more rhythm in the competition than Milan and will enter the game hungry after its loss to CSKA. Milan has one of the best shooting percentages in the league from beyond the arc, so the hosts will have to look out for those shooters in open positions. Valencia will have to make good use of its league-best 59.7% on two-point shots and not get over-confident due to playing a team that has not seen the courts in a couple of weeks.

Vanja Marinkovic won’t be available against Milan due to shoulder injury. Joan Sastre is sidelined with a partial tear to the internal lateral ligament of his right knee.

Milan will have two opponents on Friday: Valencia and itself, as it tries to get back into rhythm missing a beat. The visitors will have to increase its league-low 13.8 assists per game and do so with Malcolm Delaney not expected back yet from a sprained ankle. That puts a lot of pressure on Sergio Rodriguez. On defense, stopping Valencia’s big men is the main goal if Milan expects to win.

Kevin Punter has been sidelined for the start of the season with a hip flexor. Malcolm Delaney is expected to be out until mid-November with a sprained ankle. Vladimir Micov has missed the start of the season with an elbow injury.
