Crvena Zvezda – Zalgiris

Zvezda (1-1) aims to stay perfect at home while hosting unbeaten Zalgiris (2-0) in the first game of the season’s first double-round week on Tuesday. The hosts come off a resounding 90-73 victory over Baskonia in which Jordan Loyd scored 30 points as the Round 2 MVP. Zalgiris beat undermanned Khimki 70-84 on Saturday as Marius Grigonis scored 21 points. The visitors now aims for their third straight road win to start the season in hopes of retaining a share of first place. Zvezda will aim to prove there’s only one Z team that’s top on its home floor.

Solid 40.7% three-point shooting has accounted for 43.1% of Zvezda’s scoring through two games, however four players are contributing at least 2.5 turnovers each to the team’s league-leading 17.5 average. If more of those possessions result in shots instead of turnovers, Zvezda should thrive at home, especially with new point guard Langston Hall dishing as well as he did – 11 assists – against Baskonia. If Kuzmic gets more rebounding help from Duop Reath and Marko Jagodic-Kuridza, Zvezda will be in a position to run, too, against a Zalgiris team that prefers to play half-court defense.

Zalgiris allows just 68.5 points per game, second-best in the league so far, based in part on keeping teams off the free throw line, which might help in stopping Loyd, who has thrived there so far. Likewise, the visitors will want to mind their rebounding with Kuzmic on the loose and their own Joffrey Lauvergne having sat out Saturday’s win. Expect a lot of ball control from Lekavicius, Grigonis and Thomas Walkup as Zalgiris tries to stretch Zvezda’s defense until more open shots come available late in possessions.

Zalgiris Kaunas announced on Thursday that center Joffrey Lauvergne has tested positive for COVID-19. He missed the team’s Round 2 game.

basketball prediction Tip: 1 (-5.5) at 1.90 with bet365
(Price correct at 13/10/2020, 8:15 CET, subject to change)

ALBA Berlin – Efes Anadolu

One team will break into the win column belatedly when ALBA (0-2) hosts Efes (0-2) on Tuesday in the German capital. After falling at home in a Round 2 blowout to archrival Munich and now facing a murderers’ row of opponents to finish the month, ALBA needs a confidence-building victory as quickly as possible. Home losses to Zenit and archrival Fenerbahce have put last season’s runaway standings leader, Efes, in a position of having to get something started amid twin road games in the season’s first double-round week.

ALBA has to do something to shore up its interior defense, which is letting opposing teams make an easy 63.3% of those two-point shots. Taking care of the ball will help, too, with opponents having nabbed 17 steals from ALBA over two games. While this young team comes together, veterans Jayson Granger, Peyton Siva, Luke Sikma and Niels Giffey will need to be counted on to limit turnovers and help keep opponents away from the basket – or else ALBA will be in a position of having to outgun other teams to win.

Shane Larkin missed the first two games of the season due to injury.

basketball prediction Tip: 2 (-7.5) at 1.83 with bet365
(Price correct at 13/10/2020, 8:15 CET, subject to change)

Villeurbanne – Panathinaikos

ASVEL (0-2) seeks a first win this season in its home opener while Panathinaikos (1-1) has a chance to get revenge for a last-minute loss in Villeurbanne almost exactly a year ago. The French club lost its second straight road game, 87-73 at mighty Milan,  in part due to high turnovers. Panathinaikos lost its derby with Olympiacos at home 71-78 after struggling on the boards and despite 15 points from Marcus Foster. This game could be affected by the cases of two unnamed COVID-19 cases announced by ASVEL on Saturday.

Paul Lacombe has missed ASVEL’s Round 2 game.

ASVEL lost a close defensive battle at Valencia by 2 points but was much further from Milan, losing by 14, despite scoring more. As such, with only three players – Fall, Norris Cole and Amine Noua – having reached 10 points in scoring so far, the hosts will want to double down on defense and press their 16.0-to-11.5 advantage in assists over Panathinaikos. ASVEL should also go inside more. The team ranks first in two-point accuracy (58.7%) but still makes fewer of those shots than all but five other EuroLeague teams. There’s gold near the basket, and with Fall, Noua and others thriving there, ASVEL’s first win could well come right around the rim.

The names have not been confirmed but ASVEL is facing 2 or 3 cases of Covid-19.

The Greens won while outrebounding host Khimki by 7 in Round 1 despite lower shooting percentages, and they lost to Olympiacos at home while losing the battle of the boards by 5. That puts the focus on Papagiannis, Papapetrou and Konstantinos Mitoglou to lead the charge in Villeurbanne against an ASVEL team in the lower half of the rebounding rankings. The Greens are still looking for Nemanja Nedovic to truly join the scoring duo of Papapetrou and Marcus Foster. He and Papapetrou have hit just 3 of 22 three-pointers between them, a big part of the team’s league-low 22.9% from behind the arc. As soon as the Greens break that slump, they’ll be much more dangerous.

Pierre Jackson has missed the first two games of the season.

basketball prediction Tip: Awaiting odds

Baskonia – Zenit

The game has been postponed.

Zenit announced earlier this week that four players and four members of the coaching staff tested positive for COVID-19. Coaches Xavi Pascual, Iñigo Zorzano Pascual, Sergey Voznyuk and Yaroslav Yalovchuk and players Mateusz Ponitka, Igor Volkhin, Billy Baron and Kevin Pangos come on top of the positive results already announced for players Arturas Gudaitis, Anton Pushkov, Vladislav Trushkin, Austin Hollins and masseur Andrei Kozlov. All told, Zenit has positive results for the presence of COVID-19 in eight players, four coaches and one masseur.

Valencia – Barcelona

This Mediterranean coastal derby pits unbeaten Valencia (2-0) against its neighbor to the north, Barcelona (1-1), in a battle of teams that know each other quite well. Valencia has not left Spain through two victories, the last an impressive 77-93 thrashing of Real Madrid on the road as Bojan Dubljevic hit 6 three-pointers among 24 points in 19 minutes. Barcelona suffered its first loss at Zenit, 74-70, despite 14 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists from Nikola Mirotic.

Valencia adjusts well on offense and will likely get its points at home, so keeping a lid on Mirotic, Davies and sharp-shooting Alex Abrines would be a priority for the hosts. That’s easier said than done, of course, and would start with forcing Calathes into places where his passes are less likely to lead directly to good shots. Getting the ball out of his hands makes it more likely that Valencia’s help defense can accomplish what few teams can when Barcelona is in rhythm.

Joan Sastre will be sidelined for several weeks with a partial tear to the internal lateral ligament of his right knee.

The one-two punch of Valencia centers Dubljevic and Mike Tobey, especially when they are making threes, forces an adjustment from most teams. Mirotic and Brandon Davies have the agility to guard the perimeter, but they will still have to rebound or get help from their teammates, because Valencia has been better by 6.5 boards per game so far than Barca. Valencia is a little vulnerable to assist-making opponents who get the ball inside, and that’s where Nick Calathes and Thomas Heurtel can hurt the hosts, especially if Barca rebounds and they run with Higgins and Adam Hanga on the wings.

Head coach Sarunas Jasikevicius and assistant Darius Maskoliunas tested positive for COVID-19 and missed the team’s Round 2 game.

Khimki – Maccabi

Khimki has struggled so far this season due to its many injuries but there is very good news as Alexey Shved, Jordan Mickey, Janis Timma and Evgeny Voronov are back in action and ready to play in Round 5. The Russian powerhouse comes off a 77-60 loss in Vitoria-Gasteiz, Spain, despite 17 points from Viacheslav Zaytsev. Maccabi is on a three-game losing streak. It lost at the buzzer against Olympiacos Piraeus in Round 4, 85-82, despite 18 points from Wilbekin. Expect an entertaining and intense showdown at Arena Mytishchi.

Khimki is set to play with a longer rotation for the first time since Round 1 and Shved makes his season debut, so everything is expected to be different for Coach Kurtinaitis’s team. Shved needs the ball to facilitate things and will get it often. Players like Dairis Bertans and Zaytsev are expected to have more space to shoot and drive. Maccabi has a strong frontcourt, so players such as Mickey, Jonas Jerebko and Devin Booker must be ready to power the boards and stop Othello Hunter and Ante Zizic down low.

Khimki’s Jordan Mickey, Janis Timma, Evgeny Voronov, Greg Monroe and Maxim Barashkov all tested positive for COVID-19 and missed last week’s games. Alexey Shved, Stefan Jovic and Errick McCollum all missed the first four games of the season. Sergey Monia missed the Round 4 game.

Having effective scorers like Hunter, Zizic and Angelo Caloiaro has helped Maccabi make 55.6% of its two-point shots. Maccabi, however, ranks 14th in three-point shooting percentage (32.3%) so better selection is required. The Israeli champs rank third in offensive rebounds (11.3 orpg.) and must keep powering the glass against such a physical team. Maccabi relies on Wilbekin to make the difference in offense and needs a good defensive effort from Chris Jones, Bryant and Tyler Dorsey against Shved and Zaytsev, who has made the most out of his extended playing time recently (14.8 ppg., 6.5 apg.).

Efes – Villeurbanne

Anadolu Efes Istanbul vs. LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne, originally scheduled to be played on Friday, October 23, has been suspended. ASVEL requested the suspension of the game due to multiple COVID-19 positive cases that do not allow the team to have a minimum eight players on the Authorisation List fit to play.

Bayern – Olympiacos

Two teams that started the season with narrow losses and then went on to win three in a row will clash on Friday when FC Bayern Munich hosts Olympiacos Piraeus in Round 5. Last week, Bayern defeated juggernauts Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv and Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul in style, while the Reds took care of title contenders AX Armani Exchange Milan and Maccabi to turn their respective seasons around. One of these hot teams will see its winning streak snapped while the other will roll to its fourth straight victory.

Bayern managed to match its best start in the league since its debut in 2013-14 and it now has the chance to make it the best start ever. The team has become the highest-scoring squad in the league (82.3 ppg.) and is also second in steals (9.0 spg.) which means it likes to be aggressive on defense and run on the breaks. However, Olympiacos is also in great momentum and the differences between both teams are minimal, number-wise, so the trio formed by Lucic, Jalen Reynolds and Wade Baldwin will have to make sure they push Bayern in the right direction once again.

Olympiacos is following a similar trend to Bayern and now will want to add its fourth straight win. The team is tied for fourth in the league in assists and is also sixth in PIR, just below Bayern with an unnoticeable difference. The Reds can count on veteran warriors such as Printezis, Vassilis Spanoulis, Kostas Sloukas and Kostas Papanikolaou, but lately, it has been Aaron Harrison and Hassan Martin making contributions the offensive end to keep Olympiacos going. Expect it to be no different in Munich.

Barcelona – Real Madrid

Friday marks one of the biggest dates of the season as Barcelona and Real lock horns for the 27th time this century in the EuroLeague. Nothing that happened before this season or in their eight decades of playing each other matters on derby day. For the record, though, Barca (3-1) has picked up where it left off last season, while Real (1-3) has not. The hosts are expected to still be without superstar Nikola Mirotic, and the same goes for a big-game veteran, Fabien Causeur, for Madrid — both due to being COVID-19 positive.

Low as its scoring is compared to normal, Real’s real problem is its fourth-worst EuroLeague defense, allowing 83.0 points per game. Opponents are making 43.8% of their three-pointers against Real, a league high, and getting to the free throw line 14.5 times a game. The visitors will have to mind the perimeter without fouling Barca and let Tavares worry about anyone threatening the basket up close. Once defending well, Real needs to run better with the rebounds to raise is low, 15.8 assists per game. Finally, Facundo Campazzo will have his hands full with Barca point guard Nick Calathes, and vice-versa, so controlling that matchup could be pivotal.

Nikola Mirotic missed Rounds 3 and 4 after testing positive for COVID-19.

With Barcelona possibly missing Victor Claver and Alex Abrines along with Mirotic, relative newcomers to this rivalry will have to carry the banner for the hosts. Davies and Calathes will need scoring punch from do-it-all Cory Higgins, but watch also for Rolands Smits, who helped undermanned Barca win a tough road game in Valencia. Adam Hanga will be tasked with keeping Real’s perimeter scorers under wraps, while Kyle Kuric is back to help keep the visitors’ defense honest with his own sniping. All will be needed to defend their home court on Friday.

Felipe Reyes has missed Real’s first four games of the season. Anthony Randolph missed the last two games. Real announced on Sunday that Fabien Causeur has tested positive for COVID-19.

Zalgiris – Valencia

First place Zalgiris Kaunas will look to remain atop the table when it hosts Valencia Basket on Thursday. Zalgiris picked apart Anadolu Efes Istanbul 89-73 in its last game with Nigel Hayes leading five Zalgiris scorers in double figures with 17 points. Valencia will look to bounce back from its first loss of the season in Round 3 at home against FC Barcelona. Its Round 4 game against Zenit St Petersburg was canceled. A Valencia victory would leave the two teams tied in first place.

Zalgiris has made its opponents’ lives miserable on defense while shooting efficiently on offense, which has proven to be a recipe for winning. The Lithuanian champs lead the league in three-point accuracy (41.7%) and are third in two-point shooting (57.9%). They have allowed the second-fewest points (6.98 ppg.) and the fewest rebounds (27.0 rpg.). The keys against Valencia remain taking good shots when they present themselves and playing tough defense, in particular on the guards to get the offense out of its comfort zone early.

Valencia has allowed opponents to make 58.4% of two-point shots and will need to be tougher in the paint to lower that number. It also could use a bump in three-point shooting; its 31.9% is third-lowest in the league. Valencia can take pride in its excellent steals-to-turnover ratio as it has collected the fourth-most steals (7.3 spg.) and committed the fourth-fewest turnovers (2.33), which are great numbers to fall back on in a road game.

ALBA Berlin – Baskonia

ALBA Berlin vs. TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz, originally scheduled to be played on Thursday, October 22, has been suspended. ALBA requested the suspension of the game due to local legislation imposing quarantine measures on the team, which leaves it without the minimum eight players on the Authorisation List fit to play.

Panathinaikos – Fenerbahce

Panathinaikos looks for its first win since opening night. It registered a 97-89 overtime loss against FC Barcelona last Friday despite 24 points from Marcus Foster and a double-double by Dinos Mitoglou. Fenerbahce needs to bounce back after suffering back-to-back home defeats against CSKA Moscow, 77-78 in overtime, and FC Bayern Munich, 71-75, last week.

Panathinaikos did a lot of good things at Palau Blaugrana last week: it amassed 12 offensive rebounds and 22 assists with only 12 turnovers. The Greens need to be more efficient, as they made only 51.3% of their two-point shots and rank 17th in three-point shooting (29.4%). Panathinaikos needs to be more aggressive on defense in crunch time; it allowed 22 points in overtime against Barcelona last week. Panathinaikos has many talented scorers in its backcourt, but Panathinaikos must find a way to stop De Colo and 2019 MVP, center Jan Vesely. Mitoglou and Georgios Papagiannis are set to see playing time against the “Czech Jet.”

First of all, Fenerbahce needs to be focused for 40 minutes, as it paid a high price – consecutive losses – for its lack of concentration in crunch time. It needs to make the most out of its experience, as players such as Ali Muhammed, De Colo, Vesely and Leo Westermann have been in similar situations before. Fenerbahce must run its offense through De Colo and Jarrel Eddie and expect newcomers Dyshawn Pierre and Johnny Hamilton to step up. Being physical on defense is critical against a team with a lot of great scorers. Edgaras Ulanovas faces a critical matchup against Ioannis Papapetrou, too.

Crvena Zvezda – CSKA Moscow

Zvezda looks for its second win of the season after downing TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz in Round 2. Last week, Zvezda suffered a 69-75 home loss against Zalgiris Kaunas despite 19 points from Jordan Loyd. CSKA had an up and down week; first, it bested Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul 77-78 in an overtime thriller behind Will Clyburn’s late heroics, and then it lost at home to ALBA Berlin 88-93 despite 27 points from Mike James. Expect an intense and physical basketball battle at Aleksandar Nikolic Hall.

Loyd leads the EuroLeague in scoring (21.3 ppg.), but Zvezda ranks 15th in the category (74.0 ppg.), mainly because of its poor shooting percentages inside the arc (47.6%). Dejan Davidovac and Marko Jagodic-Kuridza have the tough mission of guarding Will Clyburn at small forward. At the same time, Zvezda relies on two good on-the-ball defenders in Branko Lazic and Langston Hall to try to stop James. Zvezda must prevent CSKA from running the floor by playing half-court offense, looking for Loyd and Corey Walden. A contribution from newcomer Emanuel Terry at power forward could also make a difference.

CSKA has a lot of offensive talent; Clyburn has been hot lately and is a nightmare mismatch at small forward, James remains a top-class scoring threat, while Toko Shengelia, Johannes Voigtmann and Nikola Milutinov can run the floor like guards. In order to run the floor and make the most out of that, however, CSKA needs defensive stops and rebounds. CSKA is allowing 85.5 points per game and opponents are getting 12.0 offensive rebounds on average. Locking down the defensive glass to run the floor is critical for CSKA against a physical squad like Zvezda.
