Khimki – Milano

Khimki Moscow Region and AX Armani Exchange Milan has been suspended.

The Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season Round 8 game between Khimki Moscow Region and AX Armani Exchange Milan, which was originally scheduled to be played on Friday, November 13, has been suspended. Milan requested the suspension of the game due to local legislation imposing quarantine measures on the team, which leaves without the minimum eight players on the Authorisation List fit to play.

Crvena Zvezda – Real Madrid

Fresh off an impressive road win at LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne on Wednesday night, Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade returns home to take on Real Madrid. League-leading scorer Jordan Loyd went for 29 points and 5 steals and the defense held ASVEL to 68 points. What’s more, Coach Sasa Obradovic was able to play 11 players at least 9 minutes and no one more than 27 to keep his squad fresh for the Friday night game. After a rough start to the season, Real has won back-to-back games, including a victory at Zalgiris Kaunas for its first road win of the season.

Zvezda is last in the league in two-point shooting (45.8%) and it will get tougher to score in the paint this week with Walter Tavares protecting the rim. The hosts will need the combination of Duop Reath, Ognjen Kuzmic and Emanuel Terry to be aggressive and neutralize Tavares to improve their chances.

Marko Simonovic missed the team’s Round 7 game.

The Real offensive machine has been rolling this season; it is ranked second in the league with 81.3 points per game. Coach Pablo Laso has kept opposing defenses off balance with his depth as six different players average at least 9 points per game and four players averaging at least 2 assists. That approach could be the ticket against a Zvezda team that is coming off a road game 24 hours earlier.

Fabien Causeur tested positive for COVID-19 and has not played since Round 2.

Panathinaikos – Efes

The Friday night clash between Panathinaikos OPAP Athens and Anadolu Efes Istanbul promises to be an exciting one with both teams bringing slightly different looks. The Greens could be debuting new signing Shelvin Mack in the backcourt, while Efes may be shorthanded up front with Bryant Dunston out and Tibor Pleiss playing through a sprained ankle. Panathinaikos is eager to bounce back from an 83-89 loss to CSKA Moscow last week in which Nemanja Nedovic scored 19 off the bench. Efes has won back-to-back games, most recently 91-89 over Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv behind 23 points and 7 assists from Rodrigue Beaubois.

The Greens lead the league in rebounds (37.2 rpg.) and Efes is second-last (28.2 rpg.). Panathinaikos also tops the charts in offensive rebounds (12.6) and is facing an Efes frontline that is less than 100%. If Dinos Mitoglou, Georgios Papagiannis and Ioannis Papapetrou dominate the glass for second-chance baskets and Fastbreak buckets, the hosts become much tougher to beat.

Getting easy baskets – points in transition or on the fastbreak – will be tougher this week. Even though Efes is second in the league in steals (7.8 spg.), Panathinaikos has committed the second-fewest turnovers (11.4 per game). Likewise, fastbreaks generated by blocked shots will be fewer with Dunston out. Nonetheless, Efes is second in the league in assists (19.7 apg.) and third in true shooting percentage (50.1%), so strong play in the half-court offense could be the difference this week.

Shane Larkin (returning) and Bryant Dunson (still out) both missed the team’s Round 7 game.

Bayern – Valencia

Two teams riding high after big Round 7 wins meet on Friday when FC Bayern Munich hosts Valencia Basket, Bayern turned in a defensive gem to stifle Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade 74-59; Wade Baldwin IV and Nick Weiler-Bobb paced the offense with 15 points apiece. Valencia outlasted AX Armani Exchange Milan 86-81 behind a career-high 21 points from Sam Van Rossom. This game will mark Derrick Williams’s return to Munich, where he made his EuroLeague debut two seasons ago.

Bayern is third in the league in offensive rebounding (11.3 per game) and taking control of the glass in this clash is of supreme importance; second-chance baskets or others scored in the transition game could prove decisive against Valencia. Apropos the big men, Bayern’s 20.7 two-pointers made per game is third-most in the league and Valencia has allowed opponents to make a comfortable 57.5% of their two-point shots, which is something the hosts frontline – as well as its penetrators – may well try to take advantage of.

No team takes better care of the ball than Valencia, which tops the league with just 11.0 turnovers per game. However, Bayern will pressure Valencia; it is third in steals (7.6 spg.) and – thanks to its depth – commits a league-high 25.0 fouls per game. Sam Van Rossom and Klemen Prepelic are Valencia’s main ball-handlers and their ability to fend off Wade Baldwin IV (2.1 spg.), Zan Sisko and Nick Weiler-Bobb’s thieving hands will be important for Valencia to run its offense well and have a chance at a key road win.

Vanja Marinkovic missed Valencia’s last game due to a shoulder injury. Joan Sastre is sidelined with a partial tear to the internal lateral ligament of his right knee.

Villeurbanne – Zenit

After a midweek loss at home to Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade, Friday night gives LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne the chance to gain quick redemption as it stays in France to welcome Zenit St Petersburg, which is looking to pick up its third win of a stop-start season.

After losing by 21 points at home on Wednesday night, ASVEL faces a major mental challenge to bounce back with a much better performance just two days later. Coach TJ Parker was particularly frustrated by the ease with which Zvezda scored 89 points, accusing his players of lacking fight. The French team will be determined to set the record straight and deliver much more intensity and energy on defense to avoid falling to a third consecutive home loss.

Zenit will be rested, but can the Russian team find rhythm? Coach Xavi Pascual’s men have suffered a disjointed start to the season with several postponements, but they are now heading into a packed run of games and will look to find the necessary offensive fluency to feed experienced sharpshooters KC Rivers, Kevin Pangos and Billy Baron, who have the ability to punish the hosts from beyond the arc. Moving the ball smoothly to create good looks for those dangerous snipers could be the key for Zenit.
