Villeurbanne – Zalgiris

LDLC ASVEL Villeurbanne returns to action on Thursday to host league-leader Zalgiris Kaunas. ASVEL is back after missing three games due to COVID-19 infections at the club and it will seek its first win of the season. Zalgiris will look to bounce back after suffering its first loss, 82-94, at home against Valencia Basket. The Lithuanian champs are undefeated in three road games this season.

ASVEL did not play games in Rounds 3, 4 and 5 after having 11 team members test positive for COVID-19. They now have 8 or more players healthy to play this game.

After such a long time away from the court, ASVEL will be highly motivated but also perhaps out of rhythm. ASVEL averaged a mere 68.0 points in its first two games on 27.7% three-point shooting with 16.0 turnovers, so getting points against a tough Zalgiris side will be a challenge. Getting the team’s would-be shooters and scorers such as Norris Cole, Charles Kahudi, David Lighty and Allerik Freeman going early is vital to ASVEL’s chances.

Zalgiris scored 84 points in Round 5, but was beaten because it was outrebounded by 10 and allowed its opponents to score 94 points on excellent shooting percentages. Joffrey Lauvergne, Nigel Hayes and Augustine Rubit will be charged with locking down the boards in Villeurbanne and the team as a whole can be expected to play with more defensive aggressiveness to get back on the winning track.

Zenit – Panathinaikos

The Turkish Airlines EuroLeague Regular Season Round 6 game between Zenit St Petersburg and Panathinaikos OPAP Athens, originally scheduled to be played on Thursday, October 29, has been suspended. Panathinaikos OPAP Athens requested the suspension due to local legislation imposing quarantine measures on the team after one team member tested positive, which leaves it without the minimum eight players on the Authorisation List fit to play.

CSKA Moscow – Valencia

CSKA Moscow has lost its last two games and hopes to bounce back at home. Will Clyburn (19.2 ppg.) has been its top scorer until now, followed by Mike James (17.6 ppg.) and Daniel Hackett (10.4 ppg.). Valencia Basket is undefeated on the road after big victories in Madrid and Kaunas. Bojan Dubljevic (14.8 ppg., 5.0 rpg.), Nikola Kalinic (10.8 ppg., 3.3 rpg.) and Klemen Prepelic (8.8 ppg., 3.8 apg.) have been Valencia’s pillars until now. Expect a fun-to-watch game at Megasport Arena.

Valencia will try to spread the floor with its big men who can pull the trigger from downtown. That will force players like Nikola Miluitnov, Johannes Voigtmann and Nikita Kurbanov to stay alert in all pick-and-pop situations, as well as preventing Valencia from taking quick shots early in each possession. On offense, CSKA must rely on James and Clyburn to make the difference with their all-around skills and expect Toko Shengelia to have a strong game at power forward against Louis Labeyrie and Derrick Williams.

Janis Strelnieks tested positive for COVID-19 and missed CSKA’s last four games. Andrei Lopatin also tested positive before Round 3.

Valencia needs to bring Nikola Milutinov out of the paint to generate space for others to attack the basket and expects Dubljevic and Mike Tobey to do so with their shots from downtown. It needs to find a way to prevent James from running CSKA’s up-tempo offense. As such, Sam Van Rossom and Guillem Vives must be ready to make Valencia play at the right rhythm and look for anyone who generates an advantage on offense. From Prepelic to Williams to Fernando San Emeterio, Valencia has a lot of potential mismatches.

Joan Sastre will be sidelined for several weeks with a partial tear to the internal lateral ligament of his right knee.

Maccabi – Fenerbahce

Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv snapped a three-game slide in Round 5 and will try to turn that into its first winning streak of the season when it hosts Fenerbahce Beko Istanbul, which is looking to put an end to a three-game losing streak of its own. Maccabi bested Khimki Moscow Region 87-89 in overtime led by Tyler Dorsey, who set a Maccabi record with 8 three-pointers and scored a career-high 26 points. Fenerbahce scored a season-low 68 points in a Round 5 loss at Panathinaikos OPAP Athens despite 17 points and 6 assists from Lorenzo Brown.

Maccabi plays at a faster pace than Fenerbahce and making sure its premier ball-handlers – Scottie Wilbekin and Chris Jones – control the game rhythm will be important for the hosts. Maccabi made 14 of 32 shots from downtown last week (43.8%) and another good showing of perimeter scoring would be a major boost to Coach Sfairopoulos’s men this week.

Fenerbahce has not gotten the production it would have liked from its frontline as it is shooting 47.9% on two-pointers and averaging just 8.6 offensive rebounds per game. With Jan Vesely, Johnny Hamilton, Ahmet Duverioglu and Danilo Barthel, Fenerbahce has the manpower to improve on both of those numbers and to challenge Macccabi’s frontcourt in what could be one of the keys to the game.

Real Madrid – Bayern

Real Madrid is off to its worst start ever in the competition and looking for a home win to bounce back. Trey Thompkins (12.8 ppg.) has been Los Blancos’ top scorer until now, followed by Sergio Llull (10.8 ppg.) and Walter Tavares (9.6 ppg.). FC Bayern Munich is on a four-game winning streak, which is a club record. Vladimir Lucic (17.2 ppg.) has been its pillar with help from Wade Baldwin IV (13.8 ppg., 2.6 spg.) and Jalen Reynolds (13.4 ppg., 6.6 rpg.). Expect high intensity and a lot of action at WiZink Center.

Real ranks 15th in scoring at just 75.2 points per game. That’s almost 10 points less than last season (84.7 ppg.). It needs to improve its two-point shooting percentage (50.0% 2FG) right away and the best way to do it by being loyal to its basketball brand: securing defensive rebounds to run the floor and find easy points in transition. With Gabriel Deck sidelined, players like Fernandez, Jeffery Taylor and Alberto Abalde must take a step forwards to stop Lucic in what is a big key to this game.

Bayern has the second-best offense in the competition at 80.6 points per game despite ranking 11th in assists at 15.8. That means the offense is based on a lot of one-on-one opportunities with players like Lucic, Baldwin and Nihad Dedovic who can finish at the rim. Limiting Tavares down low is a key for any team playing against Real. Bayern has a frontcourt full of good athletes with Reynolds, JaJuan Johnson, Malcolm Thomas, who will take on Tavares in the paint. Being focused against a deep and talented opponent is one of the biggest keys.
