Khimki – Olympiacos

Khimki Moscow Region will try to put an end to an eight-game losing streak on Tuesday when it hosts Olympiacos Piraeus, which wants to end a three-game slide of its own. Khimki (2-14), which is last in the standings, returns home after three consecutive road games. Olympiacos (7-8) with finish out 2020 with a second straight road game. The Reds are 4-3 on the road this season.

For Khimki, the troubles remain its porous defense and many turnovers. The team allows the most points in the league (88.3 ppg.) on a league-high 41.9% three-point shooting while on offense committing an average of 15.3 turnovers committed per game. The keys to ending the losing streak involve improved defense and taking better care of the ball.

Olympiacos’s 35.5% three-point shooting is third-worst in the league and the Reds are also near the bottom of the rebounding standings with just 30.6 per game. Trusting its experienced players, performing better on the glass and getting open shots for its shooters would give Olympiacos a leg up in this contest.

Kostas Papanikolaou is out with an injury. Olympiacos has 1-8 in the Euroleague when Papanikolaou does not play.

Efes – Real Madrid

Anadolu Efes Istanbul will look to prove it’s turned a corner when it hosts the hottest team in the league, Real Madrid, on Tuesday. Efes (8-8) ended a three-game losing streak when it bested FC Barcelona last week and now wants to get a winning streak going. That won’t be easy against Real (11-5), which has now won five in a row behind a red-hot Walter Tavares.

Efes has struggled on the glass this season with a league-low 29.7 rebounds per game and it won’t get any easier against Real. Coach Ataman’s men have done well in taking care of the ball, allowing just 11.3 turnovers per game. A better rebounding showing and a low number of turnovers – combined with another strong showing from star guards Shane Larkin and Vasilije Micic – could be the keys for Efes.

Real is among the league leaders in assists (19.5 apg.) and two-point shooting (57.2%), which go hand in hand. The team’s deep backcourt and great ball movement help Real get good looks from all over the court, which is vital against a tough team such as Efes. The likes of Sergio Llull, Nicolas Laprovittola, Fabien Causeur, Jaycee Carroll and Albert Abalde must be on their game at both ends to propel their team on both ends.

ALBA Berlin – Zalgiris

The champions of Germany and Lithuania will clash on Tuesday when ALBA Berlin hosts Zalgiris Kaunas. ALBA (6-9) will look to put an end to a two-game slide and will have to do so without Coach Aito Reneses Garcia, who tested positive for COVID-19 over the weekend. ALBA has won three of its last four games at home. Zalgiris (9-5) has lost its last two road games at the hands of CSKA Moscow and Real Madrid, but Coach Martin Schiller’s had won six in a row on the road before that.

ALBA has struggled on defense this season, allowing teams to make a league-high 57.1% of their two-point shots, which leads to 83.6 points scored per game. Stronger interior play will be needed to shore things up, as ALBA is outrebounded by 2.6 rebounds per game on average.

Zalgiris’s 44.2% three-point shooting not only leads the league, but it’s the highest by any team in nearly two decades. It also leads the league in free-throw accuracy (87.8%). With the offense buzzing with efficiency, and the team allowing the fewest rebounds in the league (28.8 rpg.), lowering the percentages of the opponents shooting (55.1% 2FG, 38.6% 3FG) could be the key for Zalgiris.

Steve Vasturia will be sidelined at least until mid-February with a knee injury.

Maccabi – Zenit

Two teams coming off spirited wins meet on Tuesday when Maccabi Playtika Tel Aviv hosts Zenit St Petersburg. Maccabi (7-9) bested Panathinaikos OPAP Athens last week and has won four of its last five games to climb into the middle pack in the standings. Zenit (9-5) routed Crvena Zvezda mts Belgrade in Round 16 and in just its second season in the competition is sitting in sixth place. However, Zenit has lost its last two road games entering this showdown on the Israeli coast.

Maccabi has made the most of its length and depth in recent weeks will try to do the same against Zenit to dominate the boards and stay aggressive on defense for 40 minutes. Where the team could stand to take a step forward is with its three-point shooting (35.5%). If Wilbekin, Chris Jones, Elijah Bryant or Tyler Dorsey get hot from deep, Maccabi will be in good shape.

It’s all about defense for Zenit, which has allowed the second-fewest points (72.6 ppg.) in the league. However, its slow pace has Zenit scoring the third-fewest points on offense (75.6 ppg.). In Tel Aviv, Zeit must aim to control the pace and fight on the glass against a Maccabi side that leads the league in that category (35.9 rpg.).

Baskonia – Valencia

The EuroLeague will feature a showdown of Spanish-League clubs on Tuesday when TD Systems Baskonia Vitoria-Gasteiz hosts Valencia Basket. Baskonia (7-8) is in good spirits after last week’s road win at AX Armani Exchange Milan, which snapped a three-game losing streak and sent it to a share of 10th place in the standings. Coach Dusko Ivanovic’s side has lost its last two games at home and is 4-4 at Buesa Arena this season. Valencia (10-6) has won three of its last four games and has a winning record (4-3) on the road this season.

Valencia takes good care of the ball, but facing the league-leader in steals (Baskonia averaged 7.9 steals per game), the visitors must put an extra emphasis on that. If Baskonia is able to disrupt Valencia’s excellent ball movement, which has led to league-bests in both assists (20.9 apg.) and two-point shooting (59.9%), it will be in a promising position in this game.

Valencia has allowed the fourth-most points (81.2 ppg.) this season and the number skyrockets to 84.3 points in losses. Baskonia is third in the league in rebounds (34.9 rpg.) – and second in offensive rebounds (11.5). A strong effort on the glass to deny Baskonia points in transition and second-chance opportunities could be the recipe for success on the road.

Vanja Marinkovic has missed Valencia’s last 11 games due to a shoulder injury.
